This is the interview I have produced for the double page spread of my RnB music magazine. I looked at different real media text interviews to get an idea of what type of questions were asked and here is what I had come up with:
Question1: What has being an independent artist taught you about the industry and yourself? It has taught me that the industry is truly built on relationships. You have to connect to your fans and being an independent artist allows you to do this because you are more free to do what you want and get to now them on a more personal level.Overall you have to be yourself and people will love and respect him for it.
Question 2: When and how did you first become interested in music?
I first became interested in music when I was about 8 years old. My dad used to make me listen to these old school hits and I loved it. I would just listen to it all the time and as I got older I started to understand the true meaning of the songs and I loved the affect music had on me and how it made me think. I wanted to be able to create my own music and hopefully give others the opportunity to feel what I do when I listen to music.
Question 3: Tell us about the first ever song you wrote? Where did you get your inspiration from?
So when I was about 12 years old I wrote my first ever song. It was called 'lay by me'. I wrote this after my grandmother died. I went through a period of grief and I didn't know how to handle it so I expressed my grief through my music and wrote what I felt into a song. I then performed this song to my family and friends and I saw how it made people emotional and this is what I wanted to achieve with my music. I wanted people to feel and relate to the song and it did.
Question 4: Why choose RnB?
Before I was interested in RnB I was into acoustic music as its what I had listened to most. However after performing my first song to an audience I realised that I wanted to produce more upbeat music but also music I felt comfortable with and RnB allowed me to do this.
Question 5: What advice would you give to anyone who is looking to make it in the music industry?
I would say that you should firstly build a fan base. Get your music heard and out there through social media, social events etc. Make sure you know exactly what you want out of it and then work from there because if you have an end goal it makes your musical journey so much better and worth it. Being an independent artist is a lot of work because you don't get much help however, I found that its better as you are free to make your own choices about your whole image and your music where as being signed doesn't allow that as much. However it does help when wanting to be publically noticed around the world. Overall I say please just be yourself and people will love you for it. It gives you your own image and shows that you are unique and make sure you are having fun because if you don't love what you are doing then what is the point?
